The year 2021 is marked by the 150th birthday of Arnold Schönberg’s friend, teacher and later brother-in-law Alexander Zemlinsky. The Clarinet Trio, op. 3 betrays the model of its mentor Johannes Brahms, who, after an encounter with the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, found a late compositional spring. Already with the Fantasies after Richard Dehmel the young composer went his own way. Alban Berg’s expressive miniatures form an effective counterpart to his fleeting impressions of nature.
