Object #6 / Arnold Schönberg: Constructive qualities in Transfigured Night

1932

Arnold Schönberg Center, Wien

In this document, Schönberg provided an insightful analysis of motivic and harmonic relationships in his “Transfigured Night.“ As he wrote in the text that accompanies his musical examples, he “discovered“ these connections “during a sleepless night in Barcelona in 1932.“

“Of all these motivic and constructive connections, I was only conscious of the one marked III a-b-c-c1. All others are the diligent work of my brain, who did it ‘behind my back,’ without my consent.”
